New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated newly appointed Chief Minister of Punjab Charanjit Singh Channi.

Channi swore as 16th Punjab CM in presence of Rahul Gandhi, Punjab affairs in-charge Harish Rawat and many other senior leaders after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned from the post on Saturday citing that he felt humiliated as treated by Congress high command in recent months.

PM wrote on Twitter, “Congratulations to Shri Charanjit Singh Channi Ji on being sworn-in as Punjab’s Chief Minister. Will continue to work with the Punjab government for the betterment of the people of Punjab.”

The 58-year-old Dalit Sikh leader was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Banwarilal Purohit at a simple ceremony. He took the oath in Punjabi.

Jalandhar: Welcoming elevation of Charanjit Singh Channi as first Dalit Chief Minister of state, former Punjab Minister and Chairman of Punjab Agro Industries Corporation S Joginder Singh Mann said that Congress has realised dream of Dr BR Ambedkar by giving first Dalit CM to state.

In a statement issued here today, Mann said that it is proud moment for underprivileged and weaker sections of society that one of them will head the government of state. He said that since ages these people have lived a life of agony but today with blessings of Dr Ambedkar around 40% populace of state has got the proud that Punjab will have a Dalit CM. He said that well learned and well educated Channi is the most suitable and best choice for this post.

He also said that Congress has a chequered history of empowering dalits by giving them due share in power. He said that while Babu Jagjivan Ram was made Union Defence Minister by Congress, Sardar Buta Singh and Sushil Kumar Shinde were made Home Ministers by Congress. He said now with  Channi’s elevation the dream of millions of SC brethren has been realised.

Jalandhar MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary also welcomed selection of Channi as Punjab Chief Minister.

Chandigarh: The All India Congress Committee has on Sunday announced that Dalit leader Charanjit Singh Channi will be the new Chief Minister of Punjab.

This announcement comes a day after turmoil in Punjab politics that saw pulls and pressures from several claimants.

He was the leader of the opposition from 2015 until 2017 when Congress was voted to power.

Earlier, there were reports that the Congress high command has cleared the name of Sukhjinder Randhawa as the new CLP leader.

Formal announcement after a while, said party sources.

However, Harish Rawat, the AICC General Secretary in charge of Punjab, made a formal announcement on Sunday evening.

He is the MLA from the Chamkaur Sahib Assembly Constituency. Earlier, he was accused of sending lewd messages to a female IAS officer.
