Chandigarh: In another shot in arm of the Punjab Police amid an ongoing war against drugs, another big haul of approximately 73Kg heroin was recovered from a container at the Nhava Sheva Port in Mumbai. The intelligence-led operation regarding the smuggling of heroin from UAE was carried out jointly by the teams of Punjab Police and Maharashtra Police, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Friday.

The seizure of this big haul was made by Punjab Police in less than 72-hours of recovering 75Kg Heroin from a container at Mundra Port in Gujarat. With this recovery, the Punjab Police has got effected recovery of total of 148Kg heroin within three days.

“The contraband was kept concealed in the door border of the container containing white marble tiles imported by Delhi based importer ‘Nandani Traders’,” said the DGP, while adding that after concealing the contraband, the accused persons had meticulously welded the door border and painted it again.

DGP Gaurav Yadav, while terming this recovery as another achievement of the Punjab Police, said that this recovery was made in the continuation of the ongoing campaign against drugs. The war against drugs will continue, he reiterated.

Divulging more details, he said that following inputs, the Punjab Police’s State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) SAS Nagar had immediately sent a Police team to Mumbai and deputed at the Nhava Sheva Port.

The DGP said that after following due procedure and documentation by Maharashtra Police, the container was opened up which led to the recovery of a big haul of 73Kg heroin. The Police are carrying out further investigations to ascertain backward and forward linkages, he added.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Police has registered a case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act.

CHANDIGARH: With the Punjab Government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has waged war against the Drug Mafia, the Special Task Force (STF) of Punjab Police has arrested two drug smugglers after recovering 20.80Kg Amphetamine or Crystal Meth, notoriously known as ICE, from Ludhiana, Inspector General of Police (IGP) STF Gurinder Singh Dhillon said here on Tuesday. The above operation was carried out by the teams of STF Ludhiana led by AIG Snehdeep Sharma.

Those arrested have been identified as Harpreet Singh alias Bobby (40) of village Sanet in Ludhiana, Arjun (26) of Ambedkar Nagar in Ludhiana. Both are taxi drivers in Ludhiana. The Police have also booked the main supplier identified as Vishal alias Vinay, a resident of Labour Colony Ludhiana.

Divulging details, IGP Gurinder Singh Dhillon said that following a reliable information that Harpreet and Arjun to deliver supply of ICE at T-Point in BRS Nagar Ludhiana on their motorcycle Honda Dream (PB10EU6811), Police team led by Incharge STF Ludhiana Range Insp Harbans Singh raided the location and managed to arrest both the smugglers after recovering 2Kg ICE concealed in Black colour bag along with a weighing machine from their possession.

He said that during investigation, accused persons have confessed to having been selling ICE drugs for over 4 years on the instructions of Vishal alias Vinay, who is learnt to be the Kingpin. Vinay, who is otherwise working as a realtor, is step-brother of Arjun and used to supply the ICE via Arjun and Harpreet.

The IGP said that following the confessions of both the accused, the police team has also recovered 18.80Kg ICE along with a weighing machine from the house of Vishal alias Vinay, situated at Labour Colony at Jawahar Nagar in Ludhiana. The ICE drug was concealed in an almirah kept on the second floor of the house, he said.

He added that all the forward and backward linkages will be traced during the investigations, no accused will be spared and the strictest possible action will be initiated as per the provisions of NDPS Act, 1985.

AIG Snehdeep Sharma said that the Police teams are on manhunt to arrest absconding accused Vishal. Further investigations are on, he added.

Meanwhile, FIR No 140 dated 27-6-2022 has been registered under sections 21 and 29 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Phase-4 Mohali, SAS Nagar.

Chandigarh: Taking a major step forward to make the state drug-free, the Health & Family Welfare and Medical Education & Research Minister Dr. Vijay Singla, on Thursday, asked the managements of all the drug de-addiction centers to strictly curb the misuse of drugs available in these centers, failing which invite revocation of the licenses of centers and penal action will be taken against the managing staff.

During a marathon meeting with top officials of the department, the Health Minister said, “the old days are gone, when only claims to eliminate drugs were made. What will be promised now, will be fulfilled by all means at any cost. The Punjab government is serious about making Punjab drug-free state and no one, directly or indirectly involved in the drug trade, would be spared for playing with the health of the people.”

Dr. Singla said that there were 186 private drug de-addiction centers in the state and he was receiving reports of misuse of drugs in various centers. He said, “those violating the instructions of the health department will be dealt with iron hands.” At the same time, the Health Minister saught fulsome cooperation of all the chemists of the state, saying that they should provide drugs to the persons only after checking doctor’s prescription.

Ottawa: The Toronto Police launched an investigation into sudden deaths of indigenous people in suspected drug overdoses in Downton Core.

According to the police investigation, between Friday, March 4 and Monday, March 7, 2022, police responded to four separate sudden deaths as a result of drug overdoses within 51 Division. In the same time frame, emergency services also responded to nine separate incidents of suspected drug overdoses.

“It is believed all of the overdoses and deaths are linked to the use of fentanyl being distributed in the downtown core of the city. This is being investigated and in each case the fentanyl was described as being either pink or blue in colour,” police said in a statement.

The Toronto Police cautioned people that if they are taking drugs, including fentanyl, to use extreme caution and do not take them alone.

If anyone suffers serious illness after consuming a narcotic, they should attend a hospital emergency room, call 9-1-1, or go to a walk-in clinic immediately for treatment.

Chandigarh: Election Commission of India, after the Model Code of Conduct came into force, seized valuables worth Rs 500.70 crores till February 18, 2022.

The Punjab Excise surveillance teams have seized 58.18 lakh litres of liquor worth Rs 35.43 crore. Similarly, the enforcement wings have also recovered psychotropic substances amounting to Rs 368.60 crores besides confiscating unaccounted cash of Rs 32.52 crore, he added.

Moreover, 17 Assembly Constituencies in the state have been identified as Expenditure Sensitive. There are 117 Dispatch Centres and 117 Collection Centres, while 117 EVM Strong Rooms have been established at 67 locations in the state,

Chief Electoral Officer Dr S Karuna Raju said that 3467 FIRs have been registered in the state from January 9, 2022 to February 18, 2022. He said of total 3467 FIRs, 93 are related to IPC, 22 under RP Act, 203 of Property Defacement, 40 COVID-19 related, 902 are related with NDPS, 2109 of Excise, 80 regarding Arms and 18 are others.

He said that as many as 17 notices have been issued for causing noise pollution since the model code of conduct came into force.

The CEO informed that they have received a total of 16637 complaints on cVigil app till February 19, 2022 since Model Code of Conduct came into the force, of which, 12194 complaints have been resolved in less than 100 minutes. Our teams have handled these complaints in an average handling time of 45 minutes 60 seconds and accuracy rates in 94 percent, he added.

Apart from this, Dr Raju said that 619 complaints were received from ECI, of which 565 have been disposed-off, while 54 are under process. Similarly, 507 complaints have been received on National Grievances Redressal Portal (NGRS) of which 467 were disposed-off, while, 40 are under process, he added.

The CEO said that all DCs, CPs and SSPs have been keeping strict vigil to check the incidents of distribution of liquor, narcotics and money for inducing the voters and raids would be conducted immediately on receiving information or complaints.
