New Delhi: The cheetahs brought from Namibia were released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kuno National Park on his birthday today.

Seven decades after cheetahs were declared extinct in India, eight cheetahs have been brought from Namibia by a special cargo plane as part of a project to resettle the species in the country. The cargo Boeing plane took off from Namibia on Friday night.

A stage was set up in the garden, on which special cages of cheetahs were placed and PM Modi released them. These cheetahs have been brought on a special flight of ‘Terra Avia’, an airline based in Chisinau, Moldova in Europe.

It operates chartered passenger and cargo flights. Kuno National Park is located on the northern edge of the Vindhyachal hills and is spread over an area of 344 square kilometers.

Earlier, a large number of cheetahs were found in India, but gradually their number decreased rapidly in the country.
