Chandigarh: The Punjab School Education Board is working on a plan to include the year-long farmers’ agitation against the farm laws in the school curriculum.

The central government had withdrawn the laws after the farmers’ protest. Teachers’ associations have been demanding for a long time to make this struggle a part of the syllabus.

A delegation of the Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF) met the chairman of the board, Professor Yograj, on Saturday. The front’s president Vikramdev Singh said the way the agitation faced the “repressive attack” of the central government, the students will learn about the strength to unite and the democratic rights of the citizens by reading about it.

He said that the farmers’ struggle was the most notable chapter in the present history of Punjab. The teachers felicitated several other eminent personalities including Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Udham Singh, Dr. He also sought inclusion of the life and thoughts of B.R. Ambedkar, Baba Jivan Singh, Savitri Phule, Mai Bhago and the four Sahibzadas in the school curriculum.

Chairman of the Board Prof. Yograj said that a committee of scholars and experts will be formed by him for an impartial view on the issue. Before taking any decision, it will be seen whether making the farmers’ movement a part of the syllabus will benefit the students.

New Delhi: In the Rajya Sabha, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar today accused the Congress of playing politics over the farmers’ issue and adopting double standards on the farm laws.

Replying to a question from Congress member Deepender Hooda on the promise of minimum support price to farmers after last year’s farmers’ agitation, Tomar said during question hour in the Rajya Sabha that a committee has been set up to look into the proposal.

He said the committee is considering the minimum support price (MSP) and the committee also includes representatives of farmer unions.

Chandigarh: The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) will submit a memorandum to Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit on November 26. Kisan Morcha leaders and other farmers will gather at Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali on November 26. Preparations are being made for this. Davinder Singh Dehkalan, district president and Jaspal Singh, general secretary of Bhartiya Kisan Union Lakhowal, said that the central government has broken the promises with the farmers.

The cases registered against the farmers were also not canceled nor has any justice been received from the central government in the tragic incident of Lakhmipur Kheri. This has caused great resentment among the farmers.

A list of demands will be submitted to the Governor regarding the atrocities committed on farmers. On this occasion, he has also appealed to the farmer-laborer brotherhood to join the march.

New Delhi: The farmers, led by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, began a 75-hour-long sit-in at the Rajapur Mandi Committee complex this morning to press for various demands, including the dismissal of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra.

Bhartiya Kisan Union Tikait’s national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait, national organising secretary Bhudev Sharma and other prominent leaders of the organisation had reached here on Wednesday itself to stage a sit-in, said Dilbag Singh Sandhu, district president of Bhartiya Kisan Union Tikait and local convener of the sit-in.

Several other leaders of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha will also participate in the 75-hour sit-in.

Farmers from Uttar Pradesh as well as Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana are also reaching the premises of The Rajapur Mandi Committee to join the farmers’ sit-in.

On the question of taking permission from the district administration for this sit-in, Sandhu said that he has informed the administration in this regard.

However, no written permission was sought or received. Security, sanitation and drinking water arrangements have been made by the district administration.

Phagwara: The sit-in protest by farmers against non-payment of sugarcane by farmers entered the fifth day today. They blocked both sides of the highway here on Friday.

The farmers have also blocked the traffic on Hoshiarpur Road and Nakodar Road.

A large number of farmers have arrived here with tractor trolleys since this morning and glimpses of the sit-in at the Singhu border are visible to the people once again at the Sugar Mill Chowk in Phagwara. Today, a meeting of 31 organizations of farmers to be held in the evening.

Chandigarh: Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday said that the state government has completed the process to provide financial assistance worth Rs 39.55 crore to the families of 792 farmers,who had attained martyrdom during the protest against the farm laws.

The Chief Minister said that families of the martyred farmer have been given Rs 5 lakh each by the state government as financial assistance. He said that 89 families have received financial assistance worth Rs 4.60 crore in Mansa, 21 families of Tarn Taran have got Rs 1.05 crore, 117 families of Sangrur have got Rs 5.85 crore, 69 families of Moga have received Rs 3.45 crore, 10 families of Fazilka have got Rs 50 lakh, 48 families of Ludhiana have got Rs 2.37 crore, 43 families of Barnala have received Rs 2.15 crore, 113 families of Patiala have got Rs 5.55 crore, 19 families of Amritsar have got Rs 95 lakh, seven families of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar have got Rs 35 lakh, 10 families of SAS Nagar have got Rs 50 lakh and 84 families of Bathinda have got Rs 4.15 crore.

Likewise, the Chief Minister said that the government has provided Rs 1.73 crore as financial assistance to 35 families in Sri Muktsar Sahib, Rs 1 crore to 20 families in Gurdaspur, Rs 1.20 crore to 24 families in Fatehgarh Sahib, Rs 60 lakh to 12 families in Jalandhar, Rs 75 lakh to 15 families in Ferozepur, Rs 50 lakh to 10 families Hoshiarpur, Rs 5 lakh to one family in Kapurthala, Rs 20 lakh to four families in Malerkotla, Rs 1. 50 crore to 30 families in Faridkot and Rs 55 lakh to 11 families in Rupnagar. Bhagwant Mann said that the state government is duty bound to safeguard the interests of the farmers and their families. He unequivocally said that every promise made with the food growers of the state will be fulfilled.

Chandigarh: The Samyukta Kisan Morcha will hold a peaceful rail blockade across Punjab for four hours against the non-fulfilment of the demands of the Central Government at the time of suspension of the farmers’ agitation today.

The jam will take place from 11 am to 3 pm. Meanwhile, the BKU (Ugrahan) has announced to stop the rails as well as road traffic.

Sanyukt Kisan Morcha leader and Punjab Kisan Union state president Ruldu Singh Mansa said all preparations have been completed for the chakka jam. He informed that in order to meet the present farmers’ demands and the remaining demands after the suspension of delhi kisan agitation, where road traffic in other states of the country will be closed and chakka jam will be done, the ‘railway tracks’ in Punjab will be blocked.

He appealed to the passengers not to travel by train today and support the farmers’ movement to uplift the economy of the country and save the annadata of the country.

Meanwhile, the BKU (Ugrahan) has also decided to block both rail and highway roads in Punjab as part of a four-hour chakka jam call.

President of the organization Joginder Singh Ugrahan and General Secretary Sukhdev Singh Kokri Kalan informed that 8 rail routes of Bathinda Junction including rail blockades at Budhlada (Mansa) and Patiala and toll plazas in other districts will be blocked.

Chandigarh: Asserting that farmers agitation was unwarranted and undesirable, the Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann today asked the farm unions to stop mere sloganeering and join hands with state government for checking the depleting water table in Punjab.

In a statement issued here today, the Chief Minister categorically said that staggered program for sowing of paddy won’t harm the interests of the farmers but it can act as a catalyst to save the water table in state. Bhagwant Mann said that he was acting as per the path shown by the great gurus and no one can stop him from that. He unequivocally said that his doors are open for talks with the farmers but hollow slogans can’t broke his firm resolve to check the further depletion of water table.

The Chief Minister said that he is son of a farmer and knows it well that what was requirement of the farmers adding that he is fully aware of difference between June 10 and June 18. However, Bhagwant Mann said that he doesn’t owe any patent for water and air but even he owes a larger responsibility towards saving these natural precious resources. He said that instead of staging protest, the farmers should come forward and support the state government for this noble cause aimed at betterment of Punjab and Punjabis. Bhagwant Mann said that he had already announced purchasing the Basmati and Moongi crop on MSP adding that the state government was also incentivising the farmers adopting direct sowing.

The Chief Minister asked the farmers to support him for an year and said that if the farmers suffer any loss during this period then the state government will fully compensate them. He asked the agitating farmers unions to tell that whether he was wrong because he is thinking about saving the water and checking environmental pollution in the state. Bhagwant Mann also asked the agitating unions that why they were mum when a bus of school children met an accident due to straw burning at Batala or when two small children died due to fire.

The Chief Minister said that it is the high time that all of us should make concerted efforts for saving Punjab instead of indulging in such tantrums. Bhagwant Mann said that he had been raising the issue of farmers in Lok Sabha and now also he is duty bound to secure their interests. However, he said that Farmers should also realise the gravity of situation and support the state government.

Chandigarh: The farmers 16 unions under Samyukta Kisan Morcha have announced to start an indefinite Delhi-like agitation against state government in Chandigarh from May 17.

Lashing out at newly formed Aam Aadmi Party and its chief minister Bhagwant Mann for not fulfilling poll promises including bonus on wheat, uninterrupted power supply and MSP on basmati among others, SKM said that they would hold an infinite protest across the state if the demands were not fulfilled soon.

They said that a tractor-trailer march will be held to commence agitation.

The move came after 20 farmer unions held in a meeting in Ludhiana yesterday under the leadership of BKU (Lakhowal) general secretary Harinder Singh Lakhowal and decided to launch front against AAP government.

New Delhi: The Supreme court has cancelled the bail of Ashish Mishra, an accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri case. The court asked him to surrender within a week. Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait has reacted to the court’s decision and said that the Supreme Court’s decision is absolutely right.

A Bench led by CJI NV Ramana including Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli directed him to surrender within a week. The High Court considered irrelevant factors and showed unwarranted hurry to grant him bail, it noted.
