Washington: Un Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that even if global warming is “miraculously” limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius, sea levels will rise significantly and are dangerous for countries like India, Bangladesh and China.

He said global warming on earth is likely to fall on a path that would mean rising sea levels would endanger the existence of many countries.

The UN chief said that every part of the degree is important, because sea level can double if the temperature rises by two degrees Celsius. Speaking at the start of the UN Security Council meeting on sea level rise, he said every country needs to put its full emphasis on combating climate change. The meeting was attended by 75 countries.

Guterres said countries like Bangladesh, China, India and the Netherlands are in danger. It will have a serious impact on major cities on every continent, including Cairo, Lagos, Maputo, Bangkok, Dhaka, Jakarta, Mumbai, Shanghai, Copenhagen, London, Los Angeles, New York, Buenos Aires and Santiago.
