Ottawa: Canadians will no longer need to keep their homes warm with the help of oil and they will now be able to apply for heat pumps, for which a grant of $ 250 million has been announced by the federal government.

Speaking to reporters in Stellarton, Nova Scotia, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said heat pump affordability grants for low- to middle-income households will be provided up to $5,000.

He said that this amount will be spent on installing heat pumps in homes, electrical upgradation for new equipment and removal of oil tanks.

Fraser said the real savings would be when people’s electricity bills come down or such an investment would lead to fewer bills to keep homes warm.

Fraser said the grant would be available as early as the new year. But he did not say how much funds would be provided for each province and territory. No information has been obtained about how many people will be able to apply for this grant.
