Bengaluru: Citing the recent High Court’s verdict, an education institute in Hubballi district, Karnataka has not allowed Muslim girls to appear for their class 10 board examination while wearing hijab.

However, a majority of girls preferred to appear in the examination without wearing a hijab, saying that exams are more important than wearing headscarf in exam halls, sources said.

According to the information, school management sent back girl students who arrived in the centre wearing hijab in Karnataka despite their protest.

Meanwhile, a similar incident happened at government school in Ilkal town of Bagalkote district where Muslim students were not allowed to write the board exam wearing hijab while a Muslim female supervisor also suspended in Bengaluru for wearing hijab on duty.

New Delhi: 10 Muslim girls have been booked by the Karnataka police for violating prohibitory orders and staging protest over Hijab ban outside a Girls Empress Govt PU College in Tumkur, Kartanka on February 17.

“Police have registered an FIR against at least 10 girls for violating prohibitory orders issued under Section 144 of CrPC by staging a protest against the hijab rule outside Girls Empress Govt PU College in Tumkur on Feb 17, under Sections 143, 145, 188 and 149 of IPC, ” news agency ANI Tweeted on Saturday.

The move came a day after Karnataka government told the High Court that hijab is not an essential religious practice in Islam and the court in its interim order has restrained students from wearing any religious attire in the education institutes till a final order has not been passed into the matter.

A controversy erupted after a group of Muslim students attended classes after wearing headscarves in a pre-university college in Udupi and they were asked to leave the campus. Later, the matter spread to different parts and Hindu students wore saffron mufflers in the classroom in a protest against hijab.
