United States: Coming down heavily on China, India told the UN Security Council meeting that it was “deeply regrettable” to stop a legitimate proposal to blacklist some of the world’s most dangerous terrorists. India said the double standards are tarnishing the credibility of the Security Council.

In June, China, a permanent member of the Security Council and a sympathiser of Pakistan, blocked a proposal by India and the US to blacklist Pakistan-based terrorist Abdul Rehman Makki under the 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee. Makki is a relative of US-designated Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief and Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ruchira Kamboj said the practice of blocking a proposal without any explanation should end. She said there is a need for greater transparency, accountability and purpose for proper functioning of sanctions committees.

Speaking at a meeting chaired by China on “Threat to International Peace and Security by Acts of Terrorism”, Ruchira said when it comes to fighting international terrorism, all members of the Security Council should come together in one voice and take quick decisions at the earliest.
