Ottawa: The annual inflation rate cooled to 6.3% in December, following a 6.8% increase in November. Excluding food and energy, prices rose 5.3% on a yearly basis in December, following a gain of 5.4% in November, revealed the Statistics Canada.

The monthly decline in December is the largest since April 2020, mostly driven by gasoline prices, which also posted their largest monthly decline since April 2020.

Consumers paid 13.1% less at the pump in December compared with November, the largest monthly decline since April 2020. This reflected lower prices for crude oil amid concerns of a slowing global economy, as well as reduced demand following an increase in COVID-19 cases in China. On a yearly basis, prices for gasoline rose 3.0% in December after a 13.7% increase in November.

Similarly, growth in prices for durable goods slowed to 4.7% year over year in December after a 5.3% increase in November, with prices decelerating for the third consecutive month.

Prices for personal care supplies and equipment grew 9.9% year over year in December, the largest increase since February 1983

Ontario: Inflation in Canada is currently at its highest level in a decade. This has added in the woes of students going from Punjab. This is the first time since 1980 that inflation has crossed the 7 per cent mark.

Food articles have become costlier by 10.8 per cent in August 2022 as compared to August 2021. The room rent has also doubled there. Last year, where the rent of two bedrooms was between $ 1100-1200, now it has reached $ 2500.

The single room used to be available for $ 800-900 last year, is currently available for $ 1500-1600. The situation is such that hundreds of students of Punjab have to survive by staying in gurdwaras and eating langar.

Increasing number of students in gurdwaras

Harvinder Ruby, an office-bearer of the committee managing two gurdwaras in Brampton, said rent and inflation have made things difficult for students. Around 3,500 people come to our two gurdwaras a day to eat langar, of which more than half are students.

“We also giving rooms to students for a few days. If anyone needs financial help, we do that too. It is not that there is a shortage of work in Canada, but more than one million people need workers in different sectors. Many students are working in two shifts to cover their expenses,” he said.

Increase in student spending

The cost of students’ room rent has increased by $ 400-500 per month. In addition, there has been an increase of $ 150 on transport, $ 200 on vehicles/ mobiles and $ 150-300 on food items.

According to the information, the monthly expenditure of each student has increased from 800 to 900 rupees, which is 50 to 55 thousand rupees a month in Indian rupees.

Ottawa: Following a global challenge – caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s illegal and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine, Canadians are feeling the rising cost of living, therefore, the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced that the government’s first pieces of legislation introduced in the upcoming Parliamentary sitting would make life more affordable for Canadians who need it most.

The measures in these bills would including double the Goods and Services Tax Credit (GSTC) for six months, delivering support to roughly 11 million individuals and families who receive the tax credit, including about half of Canadian families with children, and more than half of Canadian seniors. Single Canadians without children would receive up to an extra $234 and couples with two children would receive up to an extra $467 in their pockets this year. Seniors would receive an extra $225 on average.Provide a Canada Dental Benefit to children under 12 who do not have access to dental insurance, starting this year. Direct payments totalling up to $1,300 per child over the next two years (up to $650 per year) would be provided for dental care services.

He said that this is the first stage of the government’s plan to deliver dental coverage for families with income under $90,000, and will allow children under 12 to get the dental care they need while we develop a comprehensive national dental care program.Provide a one-time top-up to the Canada Housing Benefit to deliver $500 to 1.8 million Canadian renters who are struggling with the cost of housing. This more than doubles our Budget 2022 commitment, reaching twice as many Canadians as initially promised. This new one-time federal benefit will be in addition to the Canada Housing Benefit currently co-funded and delivered by provinces and territories.

PM Trudeau said that the federal benefit will be available to applicants with an adjusted net income below $35,000 for families, or below $20,000 for individuals, who pay at least 30 per cent of their income on rent. These measures build on the strong action we have been taking since 2015 to make life more affordable and build an economy that works for all Canadians.

“From cutting taxes for the middle class and raising them on the wealthiest one per cent, to delivering a Canada Child Benefit and raising it every year to continue putting more money back in the pockets of nine out of 10 families with children, to cutting regulated child care fees in half on average by the end of this year for families across the country, we are delivering support for the middle class and those working hard to join it, ” Trudeau said.
