New Delhi: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday upheld the ban on wearing hijab in educational institutions in the state citing that wearing hijab js not an essential practice of Islam.

Hearing the case, the Karnataka High Court said that the hijab is not an essential part of the religion of Islam and school students cannot refuse to wear uniforms. At the same time, the High Court dismissed a petition filed by Muslim girl students seeking permission to wear hijab in colleges.

The Karnataka High Court has dismissed several petitions that were filed for permission in educational institutions.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant said all gatherings, agitations, protests or celebrations have been banned at public places in Bengaluru for a week from March 15 to March 21.

Ahead of the Karnataka High Court’s verdict on the hijab controversy, the Dakshina Kannada DC ordered a holiday in all schools and colleges yesterday (March 15).
