Washington: A prominent Indian-American veterinary doctor has stressed the need for mass vaccination of cattle, citing lumpy skin disease in buffaloes and cows in India.

Thousands of cows and buffaloes have died in India due to this disease so far. In the last few weeks, more than 3,000 animals have died in Rajasthan and Gujarat, while more than 400 animals have died due to the disease in Punjab.

Ravi Murarka, president of the American Association of Indian-Origin Veterinary Doctors, said two important steps need to be taken to prevent the spread of this deadly disease, such as mass vaccination of buffaloes/cows and stopping the migration of cattle from one state to another.
