Chandigarh: In a bid to give impetus to crop diversification across the state and save only available natural resource in form of water, the Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday announced Minimum Support Price (MSP) on Moongi crop.

Assuring the farmers sowing Moongi, Bhagwant Mann said that the state government would purchase every single grain of their crop provided they will have to sow paddy 126 variety or basmati in the same field after harvesting Moongi as both these crops take far less time for maturity as well as require less water as compared to other varieties of paddy.

The Chief Minister said, “It is for the first time that any government has assured farmers to purchase Moongi on MSP. This will enable the farmers to supplement their income by sowing another crop between wheat-paddy cycle.”

Pertinently, the MSP for Moongi is Rs 7275 per quintal and it is being cultivated over an area of 77,000 acres as compared to 50,000 acres in last year.

The Chief Minister also declared that the state government would purchase Basmati on the remunerative price to ensure market price stabilization to avoid any loss to the farmers. This step would ultimately motivate the farmers to cultivate less water consuming varieties of paddy including 126 and basmati to check the fast depleting water table in the state.

Notably, the Chief Minister has already announced a financial assistance worth Rs. 1500 per acre to the farmers adopting direct sowing of paddy.

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Police has solved the hand grenade attack at CIA Office Nawanshahr by busting a major Pak-based terror module run by Harvinder Singh alias Rinda with the arrest of its three operatives, said DGP Punjab VK Bhawra here on Monday.

Pertinently, some unknown persons on the intervening night of November 7 and 8, 2021 had hurled a hand grenade at CIA Office Nawanshahr with the intention to kill the police officials. However, police officials present in the CIA office had escaped unhurt.

Those arrested have been identified as Manish Kumar alias Mani alias Baba, a resident of village Bains in Nawanshahr, Ramandeep Singh alias Jakhu of village Atta in Goraya in District Jalandhar and Pardeep Singh alias Bhatti of village Sahlon in SBS Nagar. The police have also recovered one live hand grenade from the possession of accused persons.

DGP VK Bhawra said that after extensive and sustained investigation, the Counter Intelligence wing and the SBS Nagar police have managed to arrest three accused persons involved in this attack.

During interrogation Ramandeep confessed that he along with Manish had thrown the hand grenade at the Nawanshahr CIA Office on the directions of Harvinder Singh alias Rinda, said the DGP, while adding that Ramandeep had picked-up two hand grenades from the location at Ludhiana-Ferozepur Road as guided by Rinda.

SSP SBS Nagar Sandeep Kumar said that, while one hand-grenade was used for attack in Nawanshahr, another live P-80 Hand Grenade, similar to the one used to carry out the attack, was recovered on the disclosure of Ramandeep. Harvinder alias Rinda struck a deal with Ramandeep for Rs 4 lakhs to carry out this attack, he added.

Notably, Harvinder Singh alias Rinda, a notorious gangster active in Punjab, Chandigarh, Maharashtra and Haryana is a history-sheeter and wanted by the Punjab Police in heinous crimes including Murder, Contract Killing, Robbery, Extortion and Snatching.

Meanwhile, the police have also nominated Harvinder Singh alias Rinda as accused in this case and added sections 13/16/17/18/18-B/20 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act in the FIR dated November 8, 2021, which was initially registered under sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act and sections 307, 427 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Police Station City Nawanshahr.
