London: The Organization on Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has said that the Russia-Ukraine war and the energy and food crisis are likely to lead to lower global economic growth and increase inflation this year.

China’s ‘zero-Covid’ policies are also having an impact on the world economy. The Paris-based OECD, which includes most of the rich countries, has expressed the possibility that global economic growth could be 3 per cent in 2022, from 4.5 per cent in December last year.

The OECD consists of 38 members, including the United States, The United Kingdom and several European countries. The OECD has projected inflation to be almost double the previous estimates at 9 per cent. The World Bank, the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund have also expressed similar apprehensions in their economic advances. OECD Secretary General Mathais Korman said the global economy of the Russian war was paying a heavy price. He has warned that the poor will be the worst hit by the economic slowdown.

Moscow: German Chancellor Olaf Schulz said at the World Economic Forum summit in Davos today that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be able to conquer a war in Ukraine.

Schulz said Russia had already failed to achieve all their strategic goals. The Chancellor said Russia’s occupation of all of Ukraine is now far from reality. He said now more than ever Ukraine is looking for its future in Europe.

He said Sweden and Finland have also come closer to NATO after Russia’s brutal crackdown. The German chancellor said that Putin had made the mistake of thinking of NATO and the European Union as weak. British Foreign Minister Liz Truss also said that Russia’s defeat in Ukraine would be ensured while world is standing with Ukraine against Russia’s invasion.

Russia also said that if western countries want food supplies from Ukraine to be restored to other countries, they will have to first lift some sanctions from Russia. Western countries are alleging that Russia is stopping supplies and this has led to shortages of food grains in Africa and elsewhere.

Ottawa: The consequences of President Putin’s unprovoked and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine are far-reaching and significant. Among the most widely felt effects is the inflation of food prices and its impact on the most vulnerable people around the world, especially women and girls.

The Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will be travelling to New York City, United States, from May 18 to 19, for meetings at the United Nations Headquarters and with other foreign ministers to discuss a coordinated response to the global food security crisis.

Minister Joly will participate in the Global Food Security Call to Action, hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and will meet with a number of her counterparts to help mobilize action to address and mitigate the worst impacts of the global food security crisis resulting from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. At the United Nations, she will meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and other senior UN officials. Minister Joly will also participate in a United Nations Security Council open debate on the nexus between conflict and food security, during which she will highlight the need to find long-term solutions to break the cycle of poverty, hunger, and conflict, and to increase resilience, especially in the least-developed countries.
