New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning to attend the funeral of his former Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on September 27, Japanese government officials said.

PM Modi had close relations with Abe. During the visit, he will also meet current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Japanese media reported. Meanwhile, the two countries are also planning a second round of “two-plus-two” security talks in Tokyo on September 8 involving their foreign and defence ministers.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and Defence Minister Yasukazu Hamada will hold talks with their Indian counterparts Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Rajnath Singh at the planned ministerial-level security talks.

It is unprecedented for the Prime Minister to visit a country twice in four months. PM Modi last visited Japan in May for quad grouping.

Abe was Japan’s longest-serving PM than the rest. He was shot dead last month while delivering a speech in Japan ahead of the July 10 House of Councilor elections.
