New Delhi: Former India hockey captain Dilip Tirkey, a member of the 1998 Asian Games gold medal winning team, was today elected as the president of Hockey India.

Two others who had filed nominations for the post had withdrawn their nominations before the elections. Tirkey played 412 international matches in a career spanning more than 15 years as a defender.

The 44-year-old from Odisha represented India in 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens.

New Delhi: More than 500 players from 15 countries including India and Russia will participate in the International Grandmasters Chess Tournament starting from today in Raipuram, Chhattisgarh.

The tournament is being organised under the joint aegis of the Sports and Youth Welfare Department of the Chhattisgarh government, the All India Chess Federation and the Chhattisgarh Olympic Association, the organisers said on Saturday. The Chhattisgarh Chief Minister will give away trophies and cash prizes to the winners.

“It is a special occasion for us that for the first time a competition of this level is being held here. The tournament, to be held from September 19 to September 28, will see more than 500 players from 15 countries posing under the guidance of over 100 experienced Masters,” the organisers added.

So far, players from 15 countries including Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, USA, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Poland, Vietnam, Colombia, Iran, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Nepal have been registered here.

This was stated by Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, while addressing the felicitation ceremony of the shooters here late last evening.

The occasion was the celebration of World No. 1 ranking of shooter Anjum Moudgil, organized by Ankush Bharadwaj Sports Foundation in collaboration with Ambika Group. The Sports Minister honoured Anjum Moudgil, Gauri, Ajitesh Kaushal, Vijayveer Sidhu, Udevir Sidhu, Vishwajit Singh, Sifat Kaur, Unish, Shikha Chaudhary, Naina Verma, Somil Chaudhary, Divesh Verma, Devansh and Manraj and coach Deepali Deshpande along with Parveen Verma, Sumeet Soni, Amit Sood, Sajan Sharma, Ashwani Sharma.

Punjab was at the first place in the 2001 national games but now the position of Punjab is slowly slipping down but the new sports policy being formulated with the opinion of experts would be a gamechanger. Further, guidance will also be taken from the sports policies of neighboring state like Haryana, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh.

He said that there is no shortage of talent in Punjab, the only need is to identify it and give it the right opportunity and positive direction. The state government is working on providing a comfortable environment, good sports ground, coach, sports equipment and diet to the players, said the Minister while also thanking those who sponsored the players.
