London: Liz Truss, who is in the race for the post of British Prime Minister, has been embroiled in a controversy after a comment made about French President Emmanuel Macron.

Truss is contesting against Indian-origin Rishi Sunak for the post of Conservative Party leader and prime ministerial post.

Asked at a party event if President Macron is a “friend or an enemy,” Secretary of State Liz said if she became prime minister she would “look at Macron on the basis of actions, not words.” Sunak had earlier said the French president was a “friend”.

Sunak had said that if he becomes prime minister, he will re-establish the UK’s relations with Europe.

Opposition Labour has condemned Truss for the remarks. He said it was an “insult to Britain’s most steadfast partner”.

President Macron also responded diplomatically to Truss’s remarks in Paris. “Whoever becomes the leader of Britain, Britain will always be a friend of France. Several leaders of Truss’s own party have also condemned her for this comment.

London: UK’s Prime Ministerial candidate Rishi Sunak has said that he wants to change the relationship between Britain and India to make them bilateral so that UK students and companies can have access to India. The former chancellor welcomed people by saying “Namaste, Salaam, Kem Chho and Kidda” at an event organised by the conservative friends of India (CFIN), a migrant organisation in north London.

Most of the British Indians participated in the event. “All of you are my family,” he said while addressing the people in Hindi.

“We know that the relationship between the UK and India matters a lot,” he said, responding to a question from CFIN Co-Chair Reena Ranger on bilateral relations.

He said, “We are like a bridge between two countries. We all know that the UK knows the opportunities to work and sell in India, but in reality we need to look at this relationship differently because there are a lot of things that we’re here in the UK. We can learn from India.”

“I want to make sure that it is easier for our students to go to India and study there, it is easier for our companies and Indian companies to work together because it is not just a one-way relationship, it is a bilateral relationship and I want to bring about such a change in this regard,” Sunak said.
