Kiev: The Russian defense minister and the military have claimed control of Lisichansk, the major city in Ukraine’s Luhansk province. This brings Russia closer to succeeding in its mission to capture the Donbass region of Ukraine.

According to Russian news agencies, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin that the Russian military, along with local separatist groups, had captured the city of Lisichansk.

The Ukrainian army had worked hard to prevent Lisichansk from falling into Russian control. The President’s adviser had on Saturday raised the possibility that the city could get out of hand within a few days. Olexi Arstovitch said in an online interview that the Russian army had crossed the river and entered Lisichansk. However, Ukrainian authorities have not reacted immediately to the situation in the city.

Luhansk’s governor said on Sunday that the Russian military was strengthening its position to take over the province’s last stronghold. “The Russian army may have suffered heavy losses, but it continues to advance in Lisichansk. After the occupation of Lisichansk, the Russian army’s path to Donetsk province will be opened. The exiled mayor of Russian-held Melitopol claimed ukrainian rockets had destroyed one of the Russian army’s four bases.

The Russian Defence Ministry also said Ukraine carried out missile and drone strikes on Western Russian cities of Kursk and Belgorod but were downed. Kursk regional governor Roman Starovoit said Ukraine’s border area came under the Tetquino mortar attack.

Belarus also claimed that missiles were fired by Ukraine in their territory a few days ago. President Alexander Lukashenko calls the attack an act of provocation.

Elmau (Germany): The G7 summit, comprised by leaders of the world’s seven richest democracies, ended with a commitment to openly support Ukraine against the Russian invasion and to further hurt Russia economically through sanctions. The G7 leaders said they would make advances to prevent income from the sale of oil to the Kremlin.

The G7 leaders said they would make advances to prevent income from the sale of oil to the Kremlin. In a final statement issued by the Seven-Nation Group in Germany, the leaders stressed the need to impose “tough and immediate economic sanctions” on Russia. “We are unwavering about our commitment to imposing sanctions as long as necessary, working in solidarity at every stage, as long as necessary,” the leaders said. ’’

The leaders also agreed to ban the import of Russian gold. The member states said they would intensify their efforts to help countries struggling with food shortages due to bottlenecks in the shipment of Ukrainian grains through the Black Sea. German Chancellor Olf Schulz, who is hosting the summit, advocated the G7’s decision to reduce its commitments to eliminate investment in conventional fuel.

Before the end of the summit, the leaders condemned russia’s missile attack on a shopping mall in Kremchak. Calling the attack a war crime, he said “accountability” would be fixed on Russian President Vladimir Putin and others involved. The leaders of the United States, Germany, France, Italy, the UK, Canada and Japan said that they would continue to openly support Ukraine as long as it takes (the Russia-Ukraine war). Immediately after the summit, the G7 leaders left for the NATO leaders’ talks in Madrid (Spain). All the countries in the G7 except Japan are members of NATO. However, an invitation has also been sent to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for the Madrid meeting.

Washington: Ten weeks into the war in Ukraine, UN humanitarians on Friday said that they were urgently ramping up efforts to provide vulnerable children with specialist and psychosocial support, amid “tremendous” mental health needs and ongoing dangers linked to the Russian invasion and sexual and gender-based violence.

“We’re anticipating numbers in terms of all forms of violence against children to be in the tens of thousands for sure,” said Aaron Greenberg, UNICEF’s regional child protection advisor for Europe & Central Asia.

Since the start of war in Ukraine, we’ve reached over 140,000 children and caregivers with mental health and psychosocial support. But above all, children need peace now, UN officials said.

New Delhi: Describing Ukraine as “an epicenter of unbearable heartache and pain”, the UN chief took to the podium alongside its president in Kyiv, vowing to increase support for the people amidst the suffering, and the millions displaced in the wake of Russia’s invasion.

“I am here to focus on ways on how the UN can expand support for the people of Ukraine, saving lives, reduce suffering and help find the path of peace”, Secretary-General António Guterres told reporters from across the world gathered in a stately room, with curtains drawn.

Shortly after the press conference, two missile strikes reportedly rocked the capital, a reminder that the war is far from over, despite the Russian withdrawal from the surrounding suburbs.
