Guildford: In the UK, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss are talking to members of the Conservative Party about what they plan to do if elected as party leader and UK Prime Minister. Topics of discussion, so far, from taxes to energy prices, are well established.

But, at a deeper level, the way and tone of both speak potentially reveals a lot of the kind of leaders they will become.

Jean Sadler-Smith, professor of organizational behaviour, University of Surrey, says the words people use when talking can be an “honest sign” that provides insight into their underlying psychological processes and possible behaviours, according to The Conversation.

And since these linguistic choices are subtle, speakers themselves may not be aware of them. Also, it is difficult to hide them.

I used computerized text analysis to analyze the speeches made by Sunak and Truss during an election in Eastbourne on August 5 and compared their scores with each other and with overall averages on three major language criteria: “authenticity”, “emotional tone” and “analytical thinking”.

The findings were unexpected and in some ways not consistent with the respective reputations of the candidates. The suns turned out to be more authentic and emotional while the trusses were more analytical. But, worryingly, both were below average for analytical thinking.

Sunak was more authentic than truss

Sunak is often criticised for his clever PR campaign and is accused of being out of touch. But the analysis showed that his speech was more authentic than his opponent’s.

Those speakers are considered more authentic when they reveal themselves in an honest way through more personal, polite and sensitive language. Words indicating authenticity and self-awareness include a greater use of the first-person singular “I” relative to the first-person plural “we.”

London: Indian-origin Rishi Sunak is considered to be at the forefront of the race for the post of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, acting Prime Minister Boris Johnson has opened a front against him.

According to reports, Johnson even told his colleagues on Friday that “support anyone, but not Sunak”.

Johnson of the ruling Conservative Party resigned as prime minister on July 7. Now the process of electing the leader in his place is going on.

In the two rounds of voting, Sunak has a lead. On Thursday, he secured the most 101 votes in the second round of voting. Along with him, four more candidates are left in the race for the post of PM.  In the second round of voting, Indian-origin Attorney General Suela Braverman got the least number of 27 votes and he’s out of this race.

London: The problem is brewing for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson as his supporters are now demanding the resignation, but he is not ready to resign. Rather, he removed one of his ministers and former big supporters from the post.

Since Tuesday evening, more than 40 ministers and supporters, including three union ministers, have resigned from the Boris Johnson government.

According to local media, conservative leader Boris was tried to be persuaded by members of his cabinet on Wednesday on several occasions that it was time to leave. But in response, he removed Community Secretary Michelle Gove from the post.

He reportedly first told Boris that he should resign now for the good of the Tory party and the country.

Gove played Boris’ right-hand role in Britain’s 2016 Brexit referendum campaign, but then he dramatically fought for conservative leadership against Boris the same year and then in 2019 also stood up to Boris in the conservative leadership battle.

New Delhi: The UK Government has announced today that it is introducing new sanctions against the Russian airline sector. State-owned Aeroflot, Russia’s largest airline, Ural Airlines and Rossiya Airlines will now be unable to sell their unused, lucrative landing slots at UK airports – preventing Russia from cashing in on an estimated £50 million.

London: The United Kingdom has called UN Security Council meeting after Russian forces last night attacked the largest nuclear power station in Europe.

“We are grateful to the Ukrainian firefighters and authorities who got the fire under control and are working bravely to ensure the plant remains safe. We support the work of the IAEA in Ukraine,” Ambassador Barbara Woodward said at the United Nations Security Council Meeting on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station.

She said that this is the first time that a State has attacked a fuelled and functioning nuclear power plant.

” International law requires special protection for nuclear facilities, and it is difficult to see how Russia’s actions were compatible with its commitments under Article 56 of the first Additional Protocol of the Geneva Conventions,” the statement added.

Russian President Putin said yesterday that the “Special Military Operation” – or as everyone else calls it, the war – was going to plan.
