Ottawa: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced $40 million in funding for the community during a visit to the James Smith Cree Nation.
Addressing the gathering, Trudeau pledged that he would provide $2.5 million over a period of five years for traditional support for the community.
Trudeau also announced that $20 million would be spent nationwide for the Pathways to Safe Indigenous Communities Initiative. This is a program that focuses on the safety of indigenous communities.
The Prime Minister began his visit on Monday. He stayed at the graves of victims of deadly stabbings in Saskatchewan’s First Nation to pay tribute to them and also met with members of their families in person. Eleven people were killed and 18 others injured in a stabbing in the James Smith Cree Nation on September 4. Miles Sanderson, 32, the mastermind of the attack, died in police custody.
Trudeau also plans to meet community leaders and members.
