New York: US border authorities have arrested five people, including two Indian nationals, for illegally entering the country from Canada via a boat. US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested the five foreign nationals during a smuggling attempt near Algonac in the state of Michigan.
CBP said that on February 20, a boat was seen crossing the international border on the St. Clair River, after which officials in the area were immediately contacted.
Officials noticed that two migrants were soaked in water and shivering in cold temperatures. They told the authorities that they had fallen into the river while getting off the boat.
All the five persons were then detained and taken to a local station for further processing.
“During the investigation, the authorities found that two of the migrants were from India, one from Nigeria, one from Mexico and one from the Dominican Republic,” CBP said.
