London: People in the UK are being advised to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel as Monday was the hottest day in the country.
For the first time since the temperature records began, the mercury is moving towards the 40 degree Celsius mark.
A national emergency has been imposed by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Meteorological Office has issued its first red alert for the heat, which is a life-threatening warning from extreme heat.
The heatwave has peaked on Tuesday before some rain forecast for Wednesday.
Professor Penny Andersby, chief executive of the Met Office, said: “We can see the hottest day in the UK’s history.” “There is a possibility of 40C and above tomorrow, which can go up to 41 cards, some of the models have 43, but we’re hoping it won’t be as hot.”
