London: A senior lecturer in nursing at UK university has been struck off for harassing a Sikh colleague working with him and mocking his turban as “hat” and “bandage”.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council held a virtual hearing last week on charges of making racial remarks against the Sikh lecturer. There have been allegations against Maurice Slaven that from October 2016 to December 2018 he harassed his Sikh colleague several times due to racial remarks.

Commenting on an article on welfare work published in the journal Nursing, Slaven said, “You know everything about learning. Guru Nanak is your best friend. Where is your hat? When the Sikh man said that it was not a hat, he did not accept it. He was also accused of making objectionable remarks about Indians and saying they come to the UK on a ‘banana boat’.
