San Francisco: A man stormed the residence of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and attacked her husband Paul Pelosi in San Francisco early Friday, police said. The attacker had entered Nancy’s residence in search of her and was shouting ‘Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?’

During this time, he beat 82-year-old Paul Pelosi badly with a hammer. The attack, which took place just 11 days before the midterm elections in the US, has created new mayhem in the already tense country’s political environment.

It brought back memories of the riots at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, when Donald Trump supporters, who stormed the Parliament complex to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election, shouted slogans against the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Nancy Pelosi was in Washington DC at the time of the attack. After arriving in San Francisco late Friday, she went straight to the hospital, where her husband is being treated.

San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said: “This is not an unintentional incident. This is a deliberate incident. And this is a completely wrong act. David Deppe, 42, was arrested on charges of attempt to murder, misbehaviour with an elderly man and suspicion of theft, police said.

He was kept in the hospital late Friday night. Paul Pelosi suffered serious injuries on his right arm and both hands in the attack, the House Speaker’s Office said. Doctors expect Paul Pelosi to fully recover soon, the office said.
